Mildred Venora Johnson

Mildred Venora Johnson was born on December 4, 1905, in Arkansas, USA. She grew up in a large family, the daughter of Thomas S. Johnson, born in 1873, and Annie May Long, born in 1876. Tragically, Grandma King lost her father at a young age in 1913, and her mother passed away in 1933. Despite these early losses, Grandma King’s childhood in Arkansas was likely filled with the warmth and camaraderie of her siblings.

Grandma King had several siblings, including May Johnson (born 1894), Arzella Johnson (1896-1918), John B. Johnson (1897-1984), Marshall Eugene Johnson (1902-1966), J.R. “Bud” Johnson (born 1905), and Tommye Johnson (1912-1981). In addition, she had a half-brother, Raymond Ray Carter (1924-2005). The strong familial bonds formed in these early years would serve as a foundation for Mildred’s own family in later life.

On January 24, 1924, Mildred married Lance Elliott “Pop” King in Arkansas. Their marriage marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership characterized by mutual support and devotion. Together, they raised four children: Flora Dean King (1925-1997), Nancy Lancelyn King (1926-2009), Roger Franklin King (1928-1987), and Billy Carol King (1934-1997). Mildred was a dedicated mother, instilling in her children the values of hard work, integrity, and the importance of family.
